Enjoy the Holidays Safely
The holidays are a wonderful time of year! If you keep these tips in mind, you are on your way to a safe and fun season.
Travel Safely
- Prepare your car for winter. Put your ice scraper/brush in there, keep an extra blanket in car.
- Be sure that EVERYONE wears a seat belt- whether the trip is near or far. Child seats can be checked by the local police department if you have questions.
- Travel when you are not tired. Establish a designated driver and be aware that even over-the-counter medications can cause tiredness issues.
- Plan for traffic and if you are late- better for a SAFE ARRIVAL.
Decorate Safely
- Remember that children and pets can be harmed by things swallowed such as holly berries, tinsel, spare toy batteries, drinking standing water Christmas tree water, and anything that may smell/look "yummy" but is not meant to be eaten.
- Use caution when climbing ladders and keep electrical plugs away from snow and puddles. Follow the "UL Standard" instructions when connecting wires and lights together to prevent overheating. Use only outdoor cords for outside and follow directions on the number of light sets that can be plugged into one socket.
- Check decorations for wire frays and anything that may look odd, discolored, or aged. WHEN IN DOUBT...THROW IT OUT.
- Never tack or staple electric wires-you can cause a short or a personal shock!
Heat Safely
- If you use a pellet or wood stove, clean it regularly and do not put the ashes in the regular trash. Use an ash can and only dispose of ashes once they are cool.
- Check that your carbon monoxide detector is working and DO NOT use space heaters on propane inside or use your stove to heat your home.
- Never go to bed with candles burning and watch ALL children around lit candles.
- Keep your tree and decor at least 3 feet from heating sources. Fresh trees should have regular water with a fresh cut base so to soak up as much water as possible as you enjoy them.
- Clean your chimney or stove pipe regularly to prevent sap and soot build up.
Cook Safely
- Watch pots on the stove and watch the direction of those pot/pan handles- anyone can knock it over-even you in your rush.
- If you must use oil fryers, do so only when you can monitor it without distraction. Regardless of the holidays you should have a fire extinguisher close by whenever you are cooking. Check that it is not expired and NEVER put water on an oil fire.
- Use a thermometer when cooking to ensure doneness. Cooked foods when chilled correctly can be leftovers for a few days, but then you have to say goodbye to them (or freeze them right away to lengthen shelf life). Defrosted foods should not be re-frozen.
